Attracting songbirds
Often an under appreciated benefit of landscapes is their role in attracting birds. Songbirds help brighten gloomy days by adding color, movement, and music to our lives. By landscaping with an eye towards habitat, you can enjoy the simple pleasures provided by an increased presence of birds.

Attracting birds requires provisions for their basic necessities – food, water, and shelter. Food can be provided by feeders, but also ornamental flowering, fruit bearing trees and shrubs. Species holding fruit throughout winter months provide a vital food source for nonmigrating birds. The more kinds of food offered, the wider variety of species likely to be attracted.

Water is a near guarantee to attract birds on the lookout for drinking and bathing areas. The sound of water can significantly increase the number of species visiting. Often a simple birdbath is adequate to successfully create an inviting place for birds. Since bird baths are used as places to drink and bathe, it is important to provide clean, fresh water on a regular basis.

Shelter is a requisite for a successful bird haven. Areas simulating natural environments are essential and can be as simple as some planted shrubs or a hedge. Birds are drawn to sites providing a variety of perching places, nesting sites, and food.

The addition of trees, shrubs, and flowers will improve birding experiences, while increasing the aesthetic value of your property. With a little thought and effort, your yard can easily be transformed into a welcoming place for birds to call home.
